Storytime: Think you hate being posed?

I had a client book this week and we had the funniest conversation about her and posing. She even wrote in her intake form that she HATED photos because of being posed. It made her feel silly and awkward and yet when I asked her why she reached out to me she praised my photos. She spoke about the storytelling, the glow and my ability to capture the essence of my clients.

BUT my photos are very much posed.

I always have posing references that I want to use particularly to each client, I help them get into the pose, I direct them on how to move, and sometimes we’ll take the shot a few times over to make sure it’s just right.

So what’s the actual difference then between the photos she’s taken that she hated because she felt posed and the photos where I’ve posed my subjects?

There’s a few but today I’m talking about connection.

Connection is the relationship happening between the space of the camera and the subject. It’s the feelings in the room where that photo’s being taken. It can be supportive, fun and encouraging or it can be stiff, nerve-filled and stressful.

I have a natural ability when it comes to creating comfort in a room, and that comfort fosters a magical like connection that always takes center stage.

Simply put, great connection happens in a safe and encouraging space where you have the permission to be yourself and throw away the pesky notion of perfection.

I think it’s why so many comment on the essence of the person starring in the photo, or notice a certain glow.

When connection is just right, it supersedes what you think about posing.

You care a lot less about what’s actually happening in the photo and instead you lock in on something about that person. Maybe it’s the intensity in their eyes or the sincerity of their smile.

For the photo’s that this particular client was in love with, the connection made her overlook the actual posing and technical qualities. (Though of course, I’m also always trying to nail that too.)

Are you ready to create a beautiful gallery of images that connect not only with the camera, but with your ideal clients?

Whether you’re looking for a full rebrand, or a smaller set to compliment what you’re already working we can discuss the right package and payment option for you.

2021 booking is underway and I’m starting to hear the most beautiful words like, “My vaccine will be done by x, so I’ll be ready to shoot right after that.” (Yes, Yes Yes!) But please don’t wait until that specific date to schedule your session, it will very likely be too late.
